Matanuska Valley Tour
8 hours
Venturing north of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway, we enjoy mountainous
landscapes and maybe a rainbow or two along the way. Stops include the
Musk Ox Farm, Matanuska Glacier overlook,
Iditarod Headquarters and Eklutna Native Village,
with a stop for lunch.
Musk
Ox Farm: This private nonprofit organization is dedicated to
the development and domestication of the musk ox. These animals form the
basis of an Alaskan cottage industry for natives living in remote coastal
villages. Observe and photograph the animals, learning their natural history,
and discover qiviut, or musk ox underwool — prized for its softness,
and hand-crafted by Alaska Native knitters into garments finer than cashmere
and warmer than wool.
Iditarod
Headquarters: Stop in at the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters
near Wasilla, home and starting point for the 1,100-mile sled dog race.
Stop in for an education about the history of dog mushing as both sport
and transportation, see memorabilia and enjoy occasional presentations
featuring sled dogs and mushers.
Eklutna Native Village: Discover a uniquely Alaskan
weave of Russian and Athabaskan cultures at Eklutna Native Village and
historical park. The park features the Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox
Church, a cemetery with colorful spirit houses, and displays that explore
the history of the Russian influence on Athabaskan culture. The visitors
center has a gift shop and offers guided tours.
Matanuska
Glacier: Witness the shaping of the land at this overlook to
one of the state’s more accessible glaciers. Understand the awesome
power of ice as you view this 27-mile-long valley glacier pursue its slow
but steady trek from mountains to the Matanuska River and, finally, the
ocean.
Traditional
Blessing: The 8-hour tour includes a Traditional Blessing with
authentic regalia, presentation and blessing ceremony.
All tours are for small parties, up to 26 people. Please call or
e-mail for rates. Rates do not include driver gratuity.
