Portage/Big Game Alaska Tour
6 hours
We
travel down scenic Seward Highway, a winding road that wends between picturesque
cliffs (look for Dall’s sheep!) and Cook Inlet — a journey
with no end of eye-opening mountain views. Bring plenty of film, or memory
cards, for those of you who prefer digital cameras!
The tour include photo stops at Bird Point and Beluga Point, where sharp
eyes can sometimes spot the white-backed whales.View the mudflats and
unusual bore tides of Cook Inlet. And then there are all the opportunities
to view hanging glaciers in the mountainsides along the drive to Portage
Glacier Lodge.
The tour also includes:
Big
Game Alaska Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation: Even locals come
here to view wildlife among natural surroundings. Located on 140 acres
of Alaska wilderness, Big Game Alaska Wildlife Center opened to the public
in 1993. Injured or orphaned animals are regularly brought to the wildlife
center for care, including Adonis the Bald Eagle, who lost a wing to a
gunshot wound, and Zach, a 1-year-old black bear brought to the center
as a cub. Big Game Alaska also houses moose, deer, grizzly bear, owls,
bison, muskox and a variety of game birds.
Portage
Glacier Lodge: This lodge and gift store is a good place for
a quick lunch, snack or shopping, and is also within walking distance
of the Portage Glacier Visitors Center and lake, where you can learn more
about the history and future of Portage Glacier and view chunks of ice
floating from the calving glacier.
Traditional
Blessing: The 6-hour tour includes a Traditional Blessing with
authentic regalia, presentation and blessing ceremony.
All tours are for small parties, up to 26 people. Please call or
e-mail for rates. Rates do not include driver gratuity.
